Welcome to Out of the Deep Blue! I am a photographer and naturalist who recently moved to the Bay Area from Monterey Bay, California. From this site, you can purchase fine art prints and license images for commercial stock photography. I also offer custom digital pigment prints on fine art paper, and am available for portrait and editorial assignments.
My background is in design, engineering, and biology, sort of a strange mish-mash for a photographer, but somehow I feel it all contributes to my work. I graduated in 1998 with a BS in Product Design from Stanford University. This unique program combined training in studio design disciplines including drawing, photography, and industrial design, with a mechanical engineering degree.
After graduating, I worked in Bermuda at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (
http://www.bbsr.edu) for a year, where I became a certified research diver and fell in love with the underwater world.
Deciding to tie in this love to a career, I applied for a job at Light & Motion (
http://www.lightandmotion.com), a manufacturer of underwater imaging equipment including housings and lights for still and video cameras. As a design engineer for this company, I got to test quite a few products in-situ, and this is where my interest in underwater photography began in earnest. My interest in marine biology also increased, and I decided to return to school for a graduate degree in marine science.
In 2006, I finished all coursework for the Master's degree in Marine Ecology in the Vertebrate Ecology Lab at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (
http://www.mlml.calstate.edu). I also worked as a naturalist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch and SF Bay Whale Watching (
http://www.sfbaywhalewatching.com), leading trips in Monterey Bay and to the Farallones to watch whales, birds, and other marine life.
I am currently working on publishing a magazine focused on underwater photography with my friend and partner Eric Cheng (
http://www.echeng.com). The website is currently in production, but the magazine is titled Wetpixel Quarterly, and the Wetpixel forum can be found at:
